Adios 2012- See you next year!

2012's been a pretty good year. With plenty of awards under their belt, and the arrival of great new vehicles such as the 53 city MPG Prius C, the Toyota/Subaru brainchild the Scion FR-S, and the completely redesigned Avalon, Toyota has been at the top of their game. Whether you want something sporty, something efficient, something practical, or a little bit of everything, you can finally get all of those with their current line-up.

I'm even more excited to see what they've got planned for the next year, because I've got big plans of my own for the blog here! From my family here at Fusz to yours, hope you have had a great holiday, and I'll see you in 2013 with plenty more automotive news and tips!

Toys in a Toyota Tundra for Tots

On the topic of holiday toy drives and getting into the Christmas spirit while at work, most people are genuinely excited. Others take on slightly more of a Grinch attitude. But that all changes when you combine a toy drive with an employee barbecue! At Lou Fusz Toyota, we pulled out all the stops. Granted, with how much some of our employees (such as John and Dan) can eat, we kind of had to. Burgers, brats, Italian sausage, you name it. Everything was made in the giant grill below thanks to our grill master pal Terry Weir from our Ford store! To top it off, our lovely manager Karen picked up potato salad, slaw, chips, and at least three different cakes. It was a feast that any tailgating party would have been proud of. The leftovers didn't even make it to the next day! Believe me, I checked the break room fridge.

To fund the BBQ, our staff contributed donations for the event, and when all was said and done, we collected over three hundred dollars that we knew we wanted to put towards a great cause- specifically, Toys For Tots. Our GM Phil Fusz matched the amount we raised and then some. With money in hand, we set out on several shopping sprees to pick up toys, giving ourselves a little bit of extra time as a buffer so we could play around. Browse any toy aisle and try not to, I dare you!

After our shopping trip, we loaded up a Toyota Tundra in our showroom that already had some donated toys in it. Here was the finished result-

Nice haul, right? We then waited until our official pick up day, and helped carry all the toys into a large moving truck that was gathering up donations from all of the Fusz stores.

We had a great time collecting all the toys, and hope they go out to some deserving families in St. Louis and everywhere else! Happy holidays!

What is Toyota's "Board of Awesomeness"?

While the "Board of Awesomeness" might sound more like a college group project or a trivia night name than a team of professionals, Toyota does in fact have a research and design group that is more than happy to identify themselves with the moniker!

What does the board do? They're working together with Microsoft to develop hand gesture technology, where one can control features of a device by waving or moving their hands. According to Jim Lentz, President of Toyota Motor Sales, "Imagine a dashboard where there are no buttons to push… no screens to tap… and your eyes can remain focused on the road. That’s exactly what Toyota is working on.”

He made the statement while speaking at the 2012 LA Auto Show about the future of safety and technology. It makes sense too, considering voice recognition technology isn't perfect when it comes to understanding the different accents and dialects we all have. The combination of voice plus hand gestures working in tandem could prove to be very useful for future car related technology. The end goal is to increase driver safety while reducing distractions.

The Board of Awesomeness team members currently have a skateboard that can change speeds by raising or lowering one's hands. It almost looks like an accessory you'd buy for a Nintendo Wii, doesn't it?

Some of the technology that they're working on is helping to influence another project in Japan as well. Currently, you can get an Entune infotainment system equipped into most newer Toyota vehicles, but they're hoping to take the hands-free concepts of Entune one step further by giving your car the ability to recognize you. Imagine walking up to your car, having it scan your face, and unlock the doors or trunk for you! Then when you sit down behind the wheel, your car greets you with a friendly "Hello". That's the vision of the SMART Insect, a concept vehicle which Lentz also spoke about.

What kind of motion or hand gesture technology would you like to see in a future Toyota vehicle?

Cars + Christmas = Toyotathon

How many non-traditional holidays have you celebrated this year? Did you take part in the madness that is Black Friday? How about national "Talk Like a Pirate Day"? Or maybe the delicious chance to overindulge known as " Cookie Day", that Cookie Monster from Sesame Street supposedly created in 1980? One of the funny (and great) things about the internet is you can literally look up any day of the year, and chances are, someone has created a pseudo holiday for that day to celebrate.

Well, Toyota's in on the make-a-holiday game too. That's why they invented Toyotathon. It's not just a one-time deal either- it goes on through the beginning of January! And while it may not be an excuse to eat tons of sweets, you're certainly welcome to visit the dealership and chow down on cookies and ice cream while you ogle some brand new cars. The purpose of Toyotathon is pretty simple- the end of the year is approaching and Toyota wants to sell cars, so they figured they'd offer some nice incentives to anyone in the market for a vehicle.

What can you look forward to? The deals vary depending on where you're located, but some of the ones in the St. Louis area are:
  • 0% APR financing for 60 months on a 2013 Corolla
  • 0% APR financing for 60 months on a 2012 RAV4
  • 0% APR financing for 60 months on a 2012 Avalon
  • 1.9% APR financing for 60 months on all certified used Toyota vehicles
  • $1000 Cash back on a 2012 Avalon
  • $500 Cash back on a 2013 Corolla
  • $1500 Cash back on a 2012 Tacoma, $750 on a 2013
  • $4000 Cash back on a 2012 Tundra, $3000 on a 2013
  • $500 Cash back on a 2013 Highlander
  • $1000 Cash back on a 2012 RAV4
  • $500 Cash back on a 2013 Venza
  • Lease a 2012 Camry LE for $219/mo
  • Lease a 2013 Tundra Double Cab for $269/mo

You can view all of the incentives at Toyota's website, or you can give us a visit or call to learn more!
