What makes "40" and "50" important for Toyota?

Mention numbers in the 40 to 50 range to me and the first thing that usually comes to mind is hearing about a friend or family member celebrating a birthday. Is it time to bring out the cake with all the candles on it and the funny yet self deprecating card? Fortunately, in Toyota's case, they're not going that route. They do have two great milestones to celebrate, however!

The first is the announcement of the 40 millionth Toyota Corolla being sold worldwide, making Corolla the best selling nameplate of all time! To give you a comparison, in 1966 Toyota announced production of about 240,000 vehicles. Nowadays, over 1.1 million of them are produced annually, including the all-new 2014 Corolla with its premium interior and more stylish design. According to Jack Hollis, Toyota's Vice President of Marketing, the Corolla is "built for the way we live today and the places we go. From urban chic to family road trip, at 40 million we’re just getting started!”

Take a look at the comparison photo below and you can see just how much the car has evolved in terms of size, style, and technology. I don't think the designers of the original Corolla ever imagined it could be outfitted with a backup camera or the ability to make hands free phone calls with Bluetooth!

Now, what's special about the number 50? This story is a little more emotional, and involves a special surprise for an unsuspecting police officer in suburban New York. Michael Dee, who's been part of the police force there for over 20 years, was having a barbecue in his backyard when Toyota's U.S. Sales Chief Bill Fay showed up unannounced with balloons in hand. What was the commotion about? Well, it turns out that Michael, who had just purchased a Toyota Camry, happened to be Toyota's 50 millionth customer in America! You'll have to watch the video below to see how they celebrated Michael's purchase, and his genuinely candid reaction. Would you have felt the same way if you were in his shoes?

Lunch tastes better with a discount [VIDEO]

We recently visited Moe's Southwest Grill in Creve Coeur for lunch and faced a tough decision...what to order? There was tons of deliciousness on the menu, and everything sounded good. Granted, once noon hits here at the dealership, just about anything looks tasty! It came down to two choices: the "Homewrecker" burrito, or the loaded "Billy Barou" nachos. As any sane adult would do, I decided that I haven't eaten nachos for a meal in awhile, and opted for a plate full of chips, chicken, and pools of white queso. It was glorious.

Our lunch experience was made even better by the fact that my group and I each got a 10% discount for showing our AutoAwards cards! Check out the video we shot below, and see how you can save too. Don't forget to check the full list of participating businesses and restaurants where you're eligible for a discount!

Cars + Christmas = Toyotathon

Oversize bow, Car bow, Lou Fusz Toyota, Lou Fusz Christmas

How many non-traditional holidays have you celebrated this year? Did you take part in the madness that is Black Friday? How about national "Talk Like a Pirate Day"? Or maybe the delicious chance to overindulge known as " Cookie Day", that Cookie Monster from Sesame Street supposedly created in 1980? One of the funny (and great) things about the internet is you can literally look up any day of the year, and chances are, someone has created a pseudo holiday for that day to celebrate.

Well, Toyota's in on the make-a-holiday game too. That's why they invented Toyotathon. It's not just a one-time deal either- it goes on through the beginning of January! And while it may not be an excuse to eat tons of sweets, you're certainly welcome to visit the dealership and chow down on cookies and ice cream while you ogle some brand new cars. The purpose of Toyotathon is pretty simple- the end of the year is approaching and Toyota wants to sell cars, so they figured they'd offer some nice incentives to anyone in the market for a vehicle.

What can you look forward to? The deals vary depending on where you're located, but some of the ones in the St. Louis area are:
  • 0% APR financing for 60 months on a 2013 Corolla
  • 0% APR financing for 60 months on a 2012 RAV4
  • 0% APR financing for 60 months on a 2012 Avalon
  • 1.9% APR financing for 60 months on all certified used Toyota vehicles
  • $1000 Cash back on a 2012 Avalon
  • $500 Cash back on a 2013 Corolla
  • $1500 Cash back on a 2012 Tacoma, $750 on a 2013
  • $4000 Cash back on a 2012 Tundra, $3000 on a 2013
  • $500 Cash back on a 2013 Highlander
  • $1000 Cash back on a 2012 RAV4
  • $500 Cash back on a 2013 Venza
  • Lease a 2012 Camry LE for $219/mo
  • Lease a 2013 Tundra Double Cab for $269/mo

You can view all of the incentives at Toyota's website, or you can give us a visit or call to learn more!

Future Society of the Non-Verbal

Texting and driving.

Do you own a landline phone? Have you considered getting rid of it and only using your cell phone? As technology continues to improve, we find ourselves abandoning old ideas and flocking to newer, more efficient methods of communication. Just look around and see if you spot anyone still rocking a pager or beeper.

That being said, it's no surprise that texting is quickly overshadowing the traditional phone call for many of us today, especially amongst younger generations, who are embracing it at younger and younger ages. Whereas a phone call typically requires one's full attention, focusing on conversation with one person, texting does not. It is faster, more convenient, and allows you to easily hold multiple conversations at once. We have gotten to the point where communicating via text message has become a social norm, and can even express emotion through this medium, thanks to emoticons.  :)

Unfortunately, the situation in which we are most likely to text also happens to be the worst for multi-tasking: driving.  Your eyes are taken off the road, and your likelihood of having an accident is 23 times as high compared to non-impaired drivers. 35 states have banned texting while driving, and there are even states that ban cell phone use in the car completely, due to the amount of injury and risk it presents!

Despite bans on texting while driving, many of us continue to be guilty of doing it, and end up weaving about our lanes in traffic, or speeding up and down erratically. That's a lot of potential danger just to get back to our friends and let them know that we aren't ignoring them.
Here are a couple ideas you can try out to keep you safer when driving:

1. Drive Safe.ly
This app for iPhone and Android offers a free as well as paid version. It allows you to set up an away message when you are driving, and auto responds to incoming texts. The app will also read incoming texts sent to you, so that you don't have to look at your phone.

2. Voice to text
Most smartphones allow the user to press a button on their keypad which allows them to speak into their phone and translate their voice into a text message. While not perfect (the software doesn't always understand exactly what you're trying to communicate) it keeps your eyes more focused on the road, and not as much on your phone, worrying about typos or the auto-correct inputting something silly. The good news? Great strides are being made in voice recognition software, and continue to get better (just ask anyone who owns the newest iPhone and has used Siri).

Voice to text.

3. Hands free options (Entune)

Being able to utilize technology while keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road is the closest thing to a win-win situtation for both drivers and anti-texting advocacy groups. For that reason, an infotainment system such as Entune is recommended. You can check gas prices, weather, look up businesses on Bing, and use voice recognition to pull up directions. Toyota is also hoping to add full voice recognition functionality early in 2012  so that you will be able to send full e-mails and texts with your voice.
Entune is currently available on select vehicles, such as the Prius V, 2012 Camry, and 2012 Tacoma, with plans to become available in more vehicles next year. You can try out Entune by running the simulation online or by heading over to Lou Fusz Toyota and taking a test drive.

Earthquakes and the Automotive Industry

If we were to judge 2011 simply by natural disasters alone, this year would have to go down as one of the craziest in recent history. Magnitude 5.9 earthquakes shook up the east coast and cracked the Washington monument. Hurricane Irene came along and caused significant damage with its 135 mph winds. Tornadoes struck multiple parts of the country, including Joplin, Missouri. Overseas, one of the largest earthquakes in recorded history ravaged Japan on March 11. Business and production slowed tremendously as time and resources were allocated to disaster recovery. So how has the economy in the automotive industry been affected?

Here at Lou Fusz Toyota, you may have noticed our inventory of new vehicles has been lighter than normal. The disaster in Japan knocked out more than 650 Toyota part suppliers, which directly decreased the amount of Toyota vehicles available at dealerships across the country.

After March 11, Atsushi Niimi, head of production at Toyota in Japan, made a crucial decision for the company: pour resources first and foremost into the Prius, the world’s top selling hybrid vehicle. Within weeks, production rates were at 30-40% for the vehicle, and have grown since. 4,000 temporary workers were then hired in July to help get the ball rolling for over all production, and a full recovery has finally been made as of this fall.
Toyota’s decision to focus on hybrids is a good sign for the future of the automotive industry and the environment, as oil prices continue to climb and population rates increase worldwide.

With the capability to reach 50 miles per gallon, the Prius is one of the most efficient hybrids available. It is also a great step forward for automakers in reaching the White House’s proposed fuel efficiency standard of 54.5 mpg for vehicles by 2025.

Do you think we will see all vehicles reaching 50 plus miles per gallon in the next 15 years?

Tech My Ride: Entune

You gotta love technology. Not only does it help to simplify our lives, it keeps innovating and keeping us excited for what’s to come. Remember life before smartphones and GPS? Those were scary days, weren’t they?
That being said, Toyota is debuting a new navigation and infotainment system, Entune, which is currently outfitted in select vehicles, such as the 2012 Camry.

Entune syncing, smartphone

So, what does this thing do? Why should you care?

Entune works by syncing with your smartphone and giving you quick access to apps and information on the fly using its large display screen. When you purchase a new Entune equipped vehicle, your salesperson will help you setup the system so that is syncs specifically with your phone. What's cool is that when these apps and services on your phone update, such as Pandora, Entune will automatically sync to the latest versions as well. Even cooler is the fact that it’s an all-in-one system. You get a CD player, HD radio, DVD player, blue tooth capability, and USB/auxiliary ports, with a 7’’ LCD screen to navigate or access your content.

To put things in perspective, think of Entune as Inspector Gadget. It has tools for every situation! You can check the weather at your current location, or wherever you plan on being. If there's traffic ahead, such as a closed lane, Entune will alert you ahead of time. You can even have the system create a detour route for you on the fly in case of heavy highway congestion or road closures!

Along with those features, you can also use the built in gas app to search for nearby gas stations, and Entune will compare prices so that you can find the best deal. Want directions? There's a button that will let you speak out a business or address, and Entune will automatically find the best path for you to take.
Early next year, Toyota is hoping to add more voice recognition technology (similar to iPhone's Siri) so that you can utilize voice commands for just about anything, such as saying "I'm hungry" to pull up nearby restaurants.

Entune voice recognition

Entune-equipped vehicles come with 3 free years of service, and Toyota will add the service to more vehicles next year. Check out the Toyota website for more on Entune, or visit the Lou Fusz Toyota showroom to take a test drive and try it out for yourself.
